DIY: Chicken + Fennel Meatballs For Your Dog

chicken meatball recipe

Making meatballs are a great way to feed your pup. These bite-sized portions are perfect for dogs, as they’re easy to chew and portion out based on your pup’s size and dietary needs. They are super easy to make–just mix all the ingredients together, roll them into balls, and cook! Plus, they’re easy to serve and store with no mess. Whether you’re preparing them fresh or freezing them for later, meatballs are a mess-free and versatile option that both you and your dog will love.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 1 cup grated carrot
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 2 tsp finely diced fennel
  • 1/2 cup curly parsley chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cup rolled oats

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Shape meatballs using your hands and gently roll into 1.5 inch balls (or whatever size you prefer!).

Bake in oven for 16-18 minutes at 400 degrees. Alternatively, you can also sauté meatballs for 6-8 minutes in a pan.

I break up the meatball(s) into small pieces with a fork when ready to eat, so it’s easier for Fira to chew. This would be a great addition to kibble and/or slowly transitioning them into fresh cooked foods. To make this a complete nutritionally balanced meal, I would add a supplement for dogs like Nutri Thrive

How many meatballs does it make?

Fifteen 1.5 inch meatballs!

Can my dog eat fennel?

Fennel is a vegetable that can offer several benefits to dogs in moderation. It is rich in essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, and calcium, which help support your dog’s overall health. It also has natural antimicrobial properties that can help to fight off harmful bacteria and prevent infections. Fennel can also freshen your dog’s breath and improve their appetite, making it a great addition to homemade dog treats or meals.

You can dice the bulb in small pieces (like this meatball recipe) or even chop up the herby part (called “fronds”) and sprinkle over their food.
