Laidback California Cool
Cara Hotel just opened up late last year and it’s already getting a ton of well-deserved buzz. Located past East Hollywood and just shy of Los Feliz, this boutique hotel is super chic yet unassuming.
Because the surrounding area isn’t the most glamorous, the prices for rooms are pretty friendly on the wallet. You would never expect this ultra-chic spot here — open the arched doors and you are taken into an otherworldly, earthy oasis.
The rooms are a minimalist cream dream — a Pinterest inspo board come to life. I was actually too scared to eat my dinner on the corner chair, lest I get sauce on its boucle fabric. So, I settled into bed with my food on a bath towel.
If you’re not a total hermit like me, the highlight of Cara is their Cal-Italian restaurant (with the same name). Located inside the hotel in a moroccan-like courtyard with a grand swimming pool in the center, they serve fresh Cal-Italian favorites like heirloom tomato appetizers and handmade lemon pasta. Yes, imagine dining around beautiful blue water. But no, it is not for swimming, unfortunately — don’t pack your bikini, this time.
I chose a room in the courtyard (first floor) because I like easy access to the outdoors when I’m with the pups. Otherwise, I would have chosen a room upstairs with a balcony. Keep in mind, the restaurant will get pretty loud for dinner as the rooms are very close. I didn’t mind getting an earful of gossip since dinner closes at a reasonable hour.
There was a Ralph’s and Petco next door, which was definitely convenient. It’s also in the center of the famous Thai Town, if you’re craving some authentic pad thai or tom yum soup.
With only 59 rooms and a secretive feel, I definitely see this spot becoming a local favorite hideaway and a breath of fresh air in busy LA. Dogs are welcome with a $100 pet cleaning fee.
